The Hindenburg was a massive German airship that caught fire and crashed in Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937, killing 36 people and effectively ending the era of passenger airship travel. Launched in 1936, it was the largest aircraft ever built and offered luxury transatlantic flights. The airship was filled with highly flammable hydrogen gas, which fueled the rapid and fiery disaster when a spark ignited it upon landing, leading to its tragic destruction.
